Bad Book Review Blues

When you get a bad book review

You’ve just been notified a review of your book has been posted. You’re all excited and can’t wait to see what has been written. You’re clicking onto your book’s page when…Oh no! They hated your book! This bad review is going to turn away customers from buying your book. Wait! This isn’t the end of the world. Here’s 3 tips to deal when you get a bad review.

1. You can’t please everyone!

Example: One of my favorite authors is a bestseller but the author didn’t receive such hot customer reviews.

Another example: I was reading some book reviews and one of the books had one of the worst ratings ever. I clicked the link with curiosity to find over 20 customers had reviewed the book and loved it. In life, you can’t please everyone. Will a bad review discourage future customers? On to my next tip.

2. A bad review doesn’t have to mean bad profit.

Not all customers look at a bad review as their only guide to buying. In fact, if your review is so awful, they may even buy the book to see if it’s really as bad as the reviewer rated it. There’s the saying that curiosity killed the cat, curiosity in this case could help you. Customers also realize that everyone has different tastes. Maybe the reviewer didn’t like your book, but who’s to say someone different won’t? It may be bad publicity, but none the less it may help you. In fact, sometimes a customer may have read the bad review but only remembers your name and or the book’s title.

3. If you’re getting more than one bad review.

It’s understandable if you’re disappointed. It’s expected, but do not allow yourself to become discouraged. If you’ve published an e-book and can easily edit your work, bad reviews can actually help your writing. Now don’t go crazy and change everything! But if reviews are constantly pin pointing on one certain area, review your work and see if and how you could improve it. I know reviewing repeatedly can be hurtful but if it can help your e-book, isn’t it worth considerings? Also, don’t start picking apart reviews right away, give yourself time to go over them. Picking apart your reviews the moment you receive them could prove fatal to your self esteem.

Do You Ever Give Up Coaching Employees?

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

In principle, we don’t want to give up coaching employees. We want to believe that we can eventually make a difference. Sometimes it’s our own ego that drives our persistence and determination.

In reality, if we have followed the coaching process, we have honored our stewardship as a coach. This is especially true if we have followed the process for a significant period of time. However, coaches often make the mistake of staking their pride and confidence as a coach on one or two challenging situations. This can be dangerous! It would be nice to believe that we have that much control over another human being. However, everyone has the right to choose their own destiny. We can’t force change; we can’t even motivate someone else. But, we can clarify, explain, explore, highlight, recommend, and encourage. When coaching employees, we have to decide when to “back off,” and let the situation either improve or deteriorate.

For years, CMOE has advised coaches to follow-up and be persistent a little longer than expected. Coaching employees takes patience – a lot of patience! But, don’t be unreasonable. If the topic permits, allow some time for the right decisions and actions to kick in. When dealing with policy, ethics, values, safety, or legal issues, explain the timeline to the coachee. We are not suggesting an ultimatum. Just explain the time sensitivity and create a time boundary.

Check in frequently with the coachee to see how they are doing, and remind them of the timeframe. If there is insufficient responsiveness or progress, this may indicate a lack of judgment, character, integrity, or indifference. When these signals arise, do a quick reality check:

  • Have you diagnosed the situation?
  • Have you tried all of the coaching skills?
  • Have you involved others in an appropriate way?

If you answer “yes” to these questions, then you need to look at your next best option to a coaching solution.

Alternatives to Coaching Employees:

  1. Discuss the dilemma with the coachee. Ask for a recommendation or solution.
  2. Redefine roles and responsibilities.
  3. Consult with your own manager.
  4. Seek good counsel from HR professionals.
  5. Actively administer and institute the appropriate consequences, both positive and negative.
  6. Explore a completely different assignment for the coachee with a different boss. Inform the new boss of the situation from your perspective.
  7. Explore, with the coachee, whether or not he/she is a good fit for the organization. Know when enough is enough.

Coaching employees takes time, energy, and patience. The bottom line is that you can’t let your big coaching challenges pull you down. Remember that it takes two to tango, and “influence” has its limits.

To find out more about how to maximize you influence when coaching employees, visit CMOE or contact one of our Regional Managers who can help you to determine you exact coaching need. You can reach them at (801) 569-3444 or email tsmith@cmoe.com

Top Ten Creative Strategies for Inspiring Creativity Where You Work and Play

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Websites, automobiles, milk cartons, living spaces. Design saturates every aspect of our lives and the difference between success and failure could be the color purple, could be the person that you talk to every morning when you wake up, or could be the amount of light that streams into your office every day.

These ten steps will support you in revitalizing your environments and will foster an amazing sense of innovation. With these strategies, creativity will become much more than a goal…it will become a way of living.

1. Start by finding out what makes you “tick” with the DISC assessment.

The DISC is a fantastic tool that can provide you with amazing insight into understanding your behavior and will help you create motivational environments and interact more effectively with others.

Are you a high D (Dominance?)- You will thrive in an environment that is fast-paced, buzzing with energy, and somewhat chaotic. A week-end in a busy city like Manhattan, Atlanta, Chicago, or Hong Kong may provide you with the motivation you need to get your juices flowing.

Are you a high I (Inspirational?)- You will thrive in an environment filled with people. A high energy convention, a mastermind group, or a cutting-edge community organization can send you to amazing new levels of success.

Are you a high S (Steadiness?)- You will thrive in a calm and consistent environment. A day in a quiet park by the water can provide you with the balance and peace that you need to get the job done.

Are you a high C (Conscientiousness?)- You will thrive in an environment that is filled with order, facts, structure, and one that focuses on tradition. A day at a wonderful book store or a historical museum will often motivate a high “C” to move to new levels of inspiration.

2. Replace your old 45s by adding Beethoven to your life.

What songs are the old records in your mind playing? “I’m not smart enough. I can’t do this. I don’t have the money. I’m not well-connected enough.” Break this pattern of negative thinking by popping in a CD of Ludwig van Beethoven. The year 1805 was a year of crisis for Beethoven, with his realization that the impaired hearing he had noticed for some time was incurable and would soon grow much worse. Did he let this stop him? Absolutely not! He actually sawed off the legs of his piano so that he could put his ear to the floor to feel the vibrations as he struck the notes of the keyboard. He came through this phase with determination strengthened and entered a new creative phase, during which Symphony No. 5 was born. Beethoven’s music coupled with his heroism can provide you with a powerful source of energy, inspiration, and a sense of pure triumph.

3. Add a punch of Red to your life!

In the practice of Feng Shui it is important to know that Red is the color of fortune as it is a color of confidence. Moreover, it attracts recognition and respect for the person who uses it. Add red candles, red roses, or red paint to your home or office and watch closely as you unleash your creative spirit and as your boldness grows to new heights.

4. Master the Master.

Jack Fields, age 13, has over 22 tournament championships and 2 holes in one under his golf achievement belt. How did he do this? By mastering the master, Tiger Woods. During his free time, Jack reads books like How I Play Golf– by Tiger Woods, In Search of Tiger: A Journey Through Golf With Tiger Woods– by Tom Callahan and Tiger Woods: A Biography for Kids — by Libby Hughes. He pours over Golf World and Golf Digest Magazine to find out what Tiger is up to, is incorporating Tiger’s diet and workout regimen, and he practices putting while watching Tiger on television during his appearances on the PGA tour. Jack’s focused study of this icon of the golfing world has stimulated him to come up with his own innovative style, quality processes, and to make smart decisions when the tournament heat is on!

5. Add an original twist to a traditional business by tapping into a hobby.

As visitors walk through the doors of Donna Lane, in Southern Pines, North Carolina, the aromas of jasmine, citrus, lemon, and roses mixed with the rich smell of coffee and mochas are enticing… making visiting this full service day spa an ideal location for renewing beauty, forgetting stress, and for getting reacquainted with old friends. CEO, Michelle Yow, is not only an expert in the field of extreme self care but is a connoisseur of fine coffees from around the world. By adding The Java Bean Plantation Coffee Company to her establishment, Michelle is able to dabble in a favorite hobby while enticing coffee lovers from her local community to take a closer look at her line of all natural skin care products. This is a clever strategy, and people love doing business with Michelle, because she is resourceful, inventive, and known for adding panache and pizzazz to a traditional business.

6. Create a feeling of warmth, comfort, and of “being home.”

Accessories reflect a highly personal touch, and they are of paramount importance in the design and décor of not only a home but a place of business. No one knows this better than David Woronoff, President and Publisher of The Pilot Newspaper (www.thepilot.com.) Breaking away from the traditional publishing design schemes, David chose hard wood floors, corian countertops, and Oriental rugs for the renovation of The Pilot, adding an element of surprise, an intimate touch, and a homey feel to the interior of this growing community newspaper.

7. Create relationships that inspire you.

Are your relationships chipping away at your creativity and your zest for life? Or, are they simply supporting you to live a life of mediocrity and of living with the status quo? Hmmm…not quite enough. By developing relationships with people and colleagues who not only support you but actually inspire you, the vacuum of success can pull you forward in a flash! Dan Askins of (www.danaskins.com) is living proof of the profound affect that positive relationships can have on your life. Dan believes that success is all about making connections with high-energy colleagues, friends, customers, and companies. By forming a marketing mastermind group and opening a full concierge service in his executive office center, Dan is quickly advancing in the world of commercial real estate development, and he is finding the courage to try innovative ways of problem solving and of approaching the challenges of both his business and personal life.

8. Play Chess.

Chess is not simply a game…it is an amazing tool for the development of the mind, and it just so happens that it is a “board game.” By adding a chess board to your home, small business, or corporation, this game can challenge you and your team to think fast, think under pressure, and to think several moves ahead. It is a fantastic game for developing vision, elements of strategic planning, and for anticipating a potential change from a customer or competitor.

9. Use your gifts and talents shamelessly.

One of the keystones of high achievement and happiness rests in your ability to exercise your talents, strengths, and gifts. As an attorney and President of a new chemical company, BenTech, Bob Friesen is a shining example of how building your life around a talent can translate into personal and career success. Bob has accessed his musical talent in a highly compelling way. With the support of a digital keyboard and his guitar, Bob has been able to use his talent to add extraordinary joy to his life, and he will soon be recording a demo of one of his many compositions. This exceptional use of talent has allowed this forward-moving professional the opportunity to play out his strengths to their fullest, which has resulted in an increase in his bottom line profits.

10. Build spaces of delight by merging the indoors with nature.

Whether it is a sun-filled breakfast or conference room, a beautiful potted plant, or a hummingbird feeder placed outside a common window, you can boost your spirits and create extraordinary joy by bringing nature into your home or office. After being challenged by the dark spaces of his basement office, Dr. Timothy Dey (www.deygroup.com) created a solution to this challenge by adding a Florida room to his home in Detroit, Michigan. Timothy now uses this room as his home office, and by filling his day with natural light, birds, trees, and all that nature has to offer, he has truly created a living and breathing environment that is warm, inviting, and truly inspiring.

Your Perfect Partner

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

A woman we’ll call “Jane” thought she was a great “catch”
and a “perfect partner” but she wondered why her
relationships always seemed to fail.

Here’s what she wrote to us–
“I dated men of various ages and cultures but all my
relationships ended up in disaster. I constantly searched,
hoping for love to come my way. Then I started reading
your newsletters. I carried a lot of personal baggage from
my past and set unrealistic standards and expectations for
my
lovers hoping they would fail because I was afraid to fail.
I was afraid they would hurt me and disappoint me, so I
made sure I would be in control when they did.”

In this situation, Jane has an incredible opportunity in
front of her. She can continue as she has been, being
fearful and attracting people who will disappoint her or
she can learn from what she has discovered about her
patterns
from the past.

It’s been our experience that we attract the people into our
lives who show us what we need to heal within ourselves, new
possibilities for the future, and the contrast of what we
want and don’t want in our lives.

We take the rather contrarian view that there are no
relationship mistakes or failures and only opportunities to
heal, learn, grow and experience joy.

Even though “Jane” thought her relationships were failures,
each one was actually another chance to become more
emotionally aware of what was going on inside her, what
she wanted for her life and to give her an opportunity to
heal and create new ways to do it differently.

What we have found is that we keep attracting the same
type of person, not just intimate partners, and experiences
into our lives until we heal the past and “do it
differently.”

Otto’s car is a black Buick Century with leather seats.
He’s very hot natured and since we live in Ohio where the
summers are very hot and humid, he suffers in his “hot”
car. He loved the way the car looked on the showroom
floor, but his day-to-day experience has given him a powerful
lesson of what he doesn’t want in a car. As you can imagine, he’s
made a clear intention through the power of contrast that
his next car will not be black or have leather seats.

He had an opportunity to learn this lesson when he was 18
years old and drove a black Ford Pinto station wagon with no
air-conditioning to Tampa, Florida at the beginning of
August. He swore then as he sat in traffic with sweat
dripping
onto the steering wheel that he’d never have another black
car.

Obviously, he hadn’t learned this lesson so he needed to
bring another black car into his experience.

The point is that Otto has finally learned from this
valuable experience and will do it differently the next
time, although he really likes a lot about his current car.

This story is an example of coming to an awareness of what
you want and what you don’t want and of learning from past
experiences that are not “failures” but are opportunities
for expansion and growth.

Please don’t misunderstand us and think that we are
recommending that because you don’t like something about
your current partner or job that you “throw them away” and
get another “model.”

What we are recommending is that you take the opportunity
to become emotionally aware, like “Jane” did, as much of the
time as possible. Decide that you deserve to have a great
relationship and a great life, whatever that means to you.

We are inviting you to learn from the past and the power of
contrast so that you can begin creating the life you want.

Here are some ideas to help you…

1. Whenever something is important to you, don’t stuff it
down and pretend it doesn’t matter. Have the courage to
share it with your partner.

2. Accept responsibility for your part in past
relationships that haven’t worked out the way you wanted
them
to work out. Look for reoccurring patterns that will show
you
where you need to heal.

3. Know that there’s no such thing as failure in
relationships, only experiences that you may not have
enjoyed.

4. Embrace the idea that no matter what has happened in
your relationships up until now, the future can be
different.

So in a sense, each person who comes into our lives is
“the perfect partner” for us if we use these experiences
that we have with them to heal, learn and grow.

How to Make Your Apartment Safe

Friday, December 26th, 2008

There are special dangers involved with apartment living. This is because you live so close to many other people. Their actions can jeopardize your safety and so it’s very important for you to be aware of what you must do to safeguard yourself, your family and your possessions.

Fire Safety . . .

Fire is perhaps the greatest danger in apartment buildings. With so many units joined together, it doesn’t take long for fire to spread from one to another. The following guidelines are critical to your safety:

• Install smoke detectors in the kitchen, all bedrooms, the laundry area and hallways. You must test them every month and replace the batteries every 6 months. They won’t do you any good if they aren’t in working order.

• Keep fire extinguishers handy in the kitchen, laundry area and near your outside grill.

• Develop an escape plan. This plan should include two ways of exiting – in most cases, this will probably include the main door and either a window or door wall. If you live on a higher floor and don’t have access to a fire escape, purchase a rope ladder to use for exiting from windows or a balcony. Practice your escape plan regularly so each member of your family knows exactly what to do in case of fire.

• Never use an elevator during a fire.

• Never park in front of fire hydrants or in fire lanes and make sure your guests don’t either.

General Safety . . .

Fire isn’t the only danger in an apartment building. You must also be aware of hazards that can exist no matter where you live and take precautions to prevent them.

• Install a carbon monoxide detector.

• Install screen guards or window stops and doorstops on your patio door to protect your children from falling.

• Keep your apartment and building number near the telephone so your family or babysitter can access it in case of an emergency. Remember that memories can fail during emergencies.

• Make certain your apartment number is clearly marked on your door.

• Be sure that each person in your family knows how to dial 911.

Protecting from Intruders . . .

There are many people coming and going in an apartment complex. Criminals count on this anonymity. That makes it very important to get to know the other tenants. When you do, not only are you better able to identify someone who doesn’t belong, it also makes it more likely that tenants will look out for one another.

• Consider forming an “apartment watch”. This is similar to a neighborhood watch but confined to your apartment complex. If a group of tenants is on the alert for suspicious behavior, they can prevent many problems from arising.

• Install quality deadbolt locks on your door and place a wooden rod or steel brace on sliding doors. One caution about deadbolt locks – don’t purchase those that require a key. In an emergency, you won’t have time to search for the key.

• Make sure your landlord has installed good lighting in all stairways, hallways, and common areas like the laundry room.

• Make sure that if your building has a common entry, the entry door locks so that only tenants can enter. Never open that door for strangers.

If you follow these guidelines, practice good common sense, and are alert to what’s going on around you, your apartment will provide a safe home for you and your family.

The Expanding Trans National Property Markets — Catered to by Property Index Online

Friday, December 26th, 2008

PropertyIndex.com make it easy to find property in Dubai, whether you are looking for a villa or an apartment, they can help you find the right property.

Though the Property Index online service must be rated a fairly young enterprise, starting their business only in March of 2007, they were fast to prove their mettle. As a matter of fact, they are a extremely hassle free enterprise focused on looking after essentially anyone who is determined to let, sell, rent or buy real estate just about anywhere. Their promise: to lend you a hand to unearth smack what you crave for fast not to mention straightforwardly. Property can be bought no matter where in our times, one of the really elite areas being properties available for sale in Dubai. It should really be easy as falling off a log to list some of the tremendous realty you can purchase in Dubai, one motivation for choosing real property here being the houses and apartments you can purchase and the good option to live amid this effervescent population.

It’s one of the most fashionable markets in our times, and in view of the overall attractiveness and the great weather surrounding you, how could you conceivably be wrong! Property in Dubai is immersed in culture, art and history, this part of the world is and has always been home to a lot of sophisticated cultures. About 20 years ago you’d find just a dribble of UK citizens in search of realty in Dubai. Ask any one person who has chosen to move to Dubai and they’re likely to tell you the same. Well, some would will view it as a mere fad and others will view it as a that’s nearly a fetish! Shoppers intending to move over here will range from young working couples looking for a challenge to the older generation who want to enjoy retirement.

There could well be difficulties when buying realty in a foreign market: you’ll want to cope with a million differentiated, not entirely logical, procedures when strategising, visiting or purchasing. If you miss out on but a single procedure that could initiate sweeping difficulties as well as, critically, loss in financial terms. As everyone would suppose with this fashionable area, realty could well be pretty dear in this place and this, of course, is just due to the broad market pressure. Notwithstanding the customer is definitely very spoilt for choice in a region so richly blessed by fair environment and scenery. It definitely has everything one may ever fall for, etc.

Joseph Isn’t Jewish!

Friday, December 26th, 2008

My sojourn at Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan, where I served as a kibbutz volunteer for five months in 1982-1983, blessed me with memories to cherish a lifetime. One of those experiences occurred immediately after our volunteers’ trip to the Golan Heights. While we were there, near the former Syrian bunker overlooking the Sea of Galilee, I spotted an eagle in the sky with a snake in its talons and pointed it out for all to stand in awe and ooh and aaah! I love God’s good creation.

While having breakfast with around 10 other people, all kibbutzniks except for one volunteer girl from France, in the kitchen of the matgeria – the chicken incubator where the eggs were stored, chicks hatched, then inoculated and sent to Europe (David, a Moroccan Jew, used to make the best shukshuka) – I used my very limited Hebrew to mention how the volunteers had just visited Ramot HaGolan (the Golan Heights). I was very happy to have seen part of the biblical inheritance of shevet Menashe ben Yosef (the Tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph), especially since the descendants of Menashe today are Americans. I said, “Yosef lo Yehudi.” Joseph isn’t Jewish!

Immediately there was quite a stir, a conversational commotion, and I asked the French girl who spoke Hebrew what was going on. She said everybody was debating whether or not Joseph was Jewish. They all started to say to me, “You need to talk to Professor Karniel, you need to talk to Professor Karniel.” I said, “Who is Professor Karniel?” They informed me he was a professor at Haifa University who lived at Ramat Yohanan and that he knew his Bible. I said, “If he knows his Bible, then he’ll know the difference between Joseph and Judah.”

Just so happened Professor Tzvi Karniel’s wife was there and she said she would talk to her husband and arrange a date to meet. We met and Professor Karniel was most gracious and said he understood the difference between Joseph and Judah, but was curious why I believed Joseph isn’t Jewish. I explained why and gave him a copy of The United States and Britain in Prophecy by Herbert W. Armstrong and The Plain Truth magazine. He said his class was now discussing the story of Joseph, and knowing how God can work, I wouldn’t be surprised if he brought up what I said about the United States being the prophesied single GREAT NATION of Menashe (Gen. 48:19). He said I was welcome to return for further conversations.

I was also later invited for coffee and conversation to the kibbutz home of a widower who was present at the breakfast and appeared angrily adamant that Joseph was Jewish. God blessed our meeting as well.

Blessed be the God of Joseph and Judah! May the modern identity of our twelve tribes continue to be restored and the reconciliation process be fulfilled. I’m pleased to help in whatever way I can to let all know that, “I am Joseph your brother!”

Casual Dress: Fashion Tips

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

On what occasions do you wear casual clothes? For some it may be running errands, attending kids soccer games, parent/teacher meetings, going to the movies, the gym or hockey games etc. It seems that, many women don’t put as much energy into building a casual wardrobe as they do a professional wardrobe and are left with nothing to wear. Take the time to build a casual wardrobe and you will always feel more put together and comfortable.

1. Choose your outfits in your best colors. Start with 3 colors that look great on you and build around those.

2. For workout clothes buy a sweat suit that suits you in color and shape. You will always look great leaving the gym and won’t be too embarrassed to stop into a store on the way home.

3. Jewelry should not be worn with a bathing suit; both perfume and jewelry should not be worn at the gym.

4. Jeans are a great casual item and look better if they are in good condition and are more slimming if they are in a darker color.

5. Women find it difficult to get jeans to fit well and often wear jeans that are not very flattering. To find the perfect jeans for your body type takes a little work, time and patience and you may have to try on a good number of pairs before you find the right fit.

6. Stay away from tight fitting pants or jeans if you do no have slim thighs. A looser fit is much more slimming and flattering.

7. Match your accessories to the theme of your outfit. A casual outfit calls for casual accessories.
