Examples from The Bible to Use in your Every Day Practice

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Christian public speaking teaching doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s often just a question of opening your Bible an reading it with a different purpose.

Here are three examples from The Bible to use in your everyday practice:

The Bible might be the most reliable tool for Christian public speaking teachings.

The rich diversification of the many Christian teachings found in The Bible is ideal to practice some of the trickiest parts of public speaking – speech delivery and vocal range.

Most preachers and clergymen can deliver some of the most difficult passages of The Bible with ease and grace because this speaker practiced an infinite number of times using this inspirational book. With reasons, The Bible offers a continuous source a material to practise almost every vocal technique. Using The Bible for your Christian public speaking teaching is a sure way to not only seal your faith and belief, but also to learn from one of the holiest books ever written.

If your faith is not Christian, don’t worry, you can still use your religious writings as an excellent way to seal your faith and practice your vocal range. The religion may differ, but the purity and sincerity of the faith usually remains the same.

1. Exercise on vocal emphasis

Tho I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And tho I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and tho I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And tho I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and tho I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Corinthians, 13

2. Exercise on vocal inflection

(Inflections show contrast and tell the facts).

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father, which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogs and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogs and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

St. Matthew 6,1-8

3. Exercise on vocal simplicity

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain:
and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him: and he
opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

St. Matthew, 5

Public Speaking: Bilingual Help

Monday, March 30th, 2009

When going over room setup and audio / visual requirements with a foreign logistics person, make sure you do it in advance of the presentation (hopefully several times), and have a bilingual person there to ensure that both you and the logistics person are on the same wavelength.

Be in the room very early on the day of the speaking engagement (at least two hours before the public enters the room) and, if possible, have your bilingual helper there too. Terms that are familiar to most English speaking speakers are difficult to translate into a foreign language.

One good idea is to take pictures of the various items you may need (overhead projector, white board, etc.) and carry them with you to the event.

When you want something, all you have to do is show the picture which, when you are desperate in a foreign country, is worth a million words.

5 Amazingly Easy Ways to Help Stay Fit

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

It is said that it is much better to do 30 minutes of
something lively every day than have two keep-fit sessions
a week. What’s more you will be surprised at some of the ways
you can burn off those extra calories.

1. The Garden Gym

Get in with your garden exercise before winter approaches!

Mowing the lawn for just 30 minutes will burn off 150 calories
if using a power mower, or 185 calories using a hand mower.

Raking the lawn will also stretch and tone your waist and help
to burn of between 130-160 calories.

Planting for just 20 minutes can burn up 100 calories.

If you do all this in one day, you can burn up to 410
calories!

2. At Work

If getting busy in the garden is only a dream, as you spend most
of your time behind a desk, don’t despair!

Get up, stretch and walk around at least once an hour.
While sitting stretch your legs, flex your feet and circle
your ankles. Run errands, fetch the post and always try to
get out for a walk at lunchtime.

3. Telephone

Spending hours on the telephone doesn’t have to be good
excercise for just your mouth. Stand up instead of sitting
it uses 10 – 12 more calories per half hour. Better still,
pace around or stand with your feet hip-width apart and
slowly move up and down on your toes to tone your calves.

4. Spice your metabolism

There is evidence to show that spices, especially chilli
can raise the metabolic rate by up to 50% for up to 3
hours after you’ve eaten a spicy meal.

5. Sweet nothing…

Kissing for 5 minutes can burn 6 calories! If it leads to
anything else :0) you could use up another 85 calories in
half an hour!

Learn How to Walk on Water

Conquering Fear vs. Walking on Water

Step 1:

Develop Clarity

The Shift

Conquering fear means you have a battle with fear and you win. You summon up your courage, whistle a happy tune, and you come through to the other side. My daughter once asked me, “If you are courageous does that mean you aren’t afraid?” I answered, “No, you’re afraid and you do it (whatever it is you are afraid of) anyway.” Being courageous is a wonderful trait but it takes a lot of energy to battle with fear.

The Leap

Walking on water means rising above your fears by not giving them attention and energy. This means you don’t have to act in the face of fear, win a battle, or make the fears go away. The fear can still be there, totally intact, but you do not identify with the fear! As the observer of the fear you are separate from the fear and you can choose to put your attention on something other than the fear. When you take action from here, the action will be more effective because you’re not using up your energy dealing with the fear.

Take the example of the way race car drivers are trained: They fear “hitting the wall” on a treacherous curve. If they focus on the wall, that’s where the race car will wind up. So they are taught to focus on a spot ahead of the curve, ahead of the wall, and that’s where the race car goes. Focus on the future you want, not the fear that is keeping you from getting there.

Step 2:

Change Your Thinking

Change your focus

When you choose to focus on You the observer, rather than the situation as something outside of your control, the fears lose their power over you. Fear is always about the future, something that can’t be anticipated or controlled; it’s the unknown. You, the one who can observe and respond to the situations, represent the known and the stability within the changing situations. You have the ability to observe the situation, choose your focus, be present in the moment, and take effective action.

Snapshots

My coaching client, Diane, dreaded attending a family reunion. She had always felt slighted, misunderstood and unappreciated by her family. Being around them was a frustrating experience. Whenever Diane expressed herself within the family, she felt nobody listened to her or cared about her opinions. So far, Diane’s only option had been to pretend to be someone else who fit in.

Diane wanted to maintain a relationship with her family without feeling like a sham. She valued family unity and it was important to her that they would always be there for one another in a pinch, no matter what. As Diane’s coach, I suggested she run an experiment: Attend the reunion without trying to change anything or anyone, including herself. Instead, I suggested that Diane set a positive intention for herself and practice self-awareness during the reunion.

Diane promised to try something new. She would practice noticing her frustration when it came up, acknowledge it, and release it with love. This shifted the focus from what her family was thinking and doing to what she was thinking and doing. It brought her You back into the equation. Diane agreed that her own thoughts and actions were the only place she had the power to make a change.

As a result of the experiment, Diane was able to make it through the reunion with less suffering while remaining true to herself. She was able to start practicing whom and what to focus on when she was with her family and to observe herself within the situation. Immediately Diane could see new possibilities for family relationships from this perspective.

Step 3:

Take Action Daily

When you have a fearful thought:

  • Take a deep breath, breathing from your abdomen (which is your physical power center), and bring yourself out of the future and back into the present
  • Notice it, acknowledge it, and release it with love
  • As an experiment, consider taking a different action from your habitual reaction
  • Feel the fear and do it anyway

Step 4:

Evolutionary Step

Use change of focus as an environment for Personal Evolution.
Usually we focus on our thinking. We are like heads walking around without bodies! Our emotions are like threads leading back to the source of our being. Change your focus from thinking to emotions as a way to create more balance in your life.

When you feel a strong negative emotion, become as expansive as you can imagine, allowing the opposite emotion to surface. Start by imagining that you begin to feel the opposite way about the person or situation. By changing your focus and having a fuller experience of all emotions, you expand your capacity to focus your attention on emotions, and experience being more than the emotions.

Experiment with working on a negative emotion – Working on the fear of loss:

The next time you feel that someone has taken something away from you, imagine giving something to that person. What happens for you when you think about loss from this perspective? What do you think would happen for the other person?

If you feel courageous after using your imagination, try actually doing it.

Write down the results of this experiment:

What did you notice about yourself?

What did you notice about the other person?

PS – When you run this experiment do it with something small to start out with. This will help you to build your muscle for doing something different in the face of a feeling of loss.

Step 5:

Transcendence

The Essential You is the one who is greater than all the emotions. At the heart of all emotions is a ground or basis that is greater than all the emotions and that ground is love. From love, the direction of emotions changes from thinking and memories to the heart of our being. When we are grounded in this awareness, we can begin to practice walking on water.

Eventually we get so good practicing walking on water that we become the water and there is nothing to fear, there is nothing to lose or gain. We don’t have to be courageous, or change our perspective. We will not be able to be truly secure unless we have this knowledge: “I am infinite”.

To unfold the awareness of the source of thinking, acting, and emotions, put your attention on that source, the Essential You. Close your eyes and see the space behind your closed eyes. Who sees the space with closed eyes?

Poker Warfare – Learning from Mistakes

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Because playing poker online is a game of incomplete information, deception and calculation, new players typically make mistakes that cost them lots of chips when playing poker and other casino games.

The only way to improve one’s poker game is to learn from these mistakes and play poker online. In The Art of War, Sun Tzu says, “It is only those who are acquainted with the evils of war that can completely understand the profitable ways to wage it.” This is applicable to poker too, where mistaken decisions cause players to lose.

There are lots of books that explain different theories and strategies for winning poker, but nothing beats actual practice and experience. Online poker, especially the “Play Chips” rooms for beginners, provides an excellent and safe environment for learning from mistakes.

Getting check raised is painful. Being the victim of a bad beat is both infuriating and humiliating. Folding to a bluff is regretful. Yet it is these very experiences that teach players how to recognize the possibility of these tactics coming into play and defending against them.

Once a player becomes familiar with the painful losses caused by the check raise tactic or slow play deception, then the player can learn how to use these as weapons to deploy against their opponents.

Do not let getting beat by a well-executed poker tactic interfere with your game. Learn from your mistakes and incorporate them into your own arsenal.

Orange to Offer Faster and More Reliable Broadband Service

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Orange has unveiled its plans to increase its home broadband speed from the current 8Mb to a significantly higher 20Mb. The rollout will take place across the UK by the end of the year; however the trials have already begun.

The company’s director for broadband and home, Asif Aziz, described the new developments to the reporters, saying that large scale testing now in progress will help the company crystallize the new service and remove any unforeseen issues.

The company has begun providing download speeds of 20Mb to chosen users for testing purposes. With this trial, Orange UK aims to work on the possible problems that the customers may face after full implementation. An expert team has been appointed specially to listen to customer grievances and suggestions, which will be critical in the countrywide rollout of the new service by the end of the year.

The upgrade will come at no additional cost for the users, and their package fee will remain unchanged from what they pay for the 8Mb service.

Customers must keep in mind though that like all other broadband services, this one too will be affected by several factors, which may lower the end-user speed, such as distance from the exchange and the quality of the line. However, it cannot be denied that the upgrade is a major one, and it will put Orange’s service among the best in the UK.

How to Write Articles That Actually Increase Internet Traffic and Deliver Results – The First Step

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

With the Internet being the cyberspace shopping mall for both individuals and businesses, securing web traffic to your website is crucial. Having a belief system that simple is much better than complicated or what some still call the “K.I.S.S.” Theory (keep it simple and sweet or simple and short), I have discovered 7 steps that have tripled my article distribution rate, doubled my view rate during the last month and also doubled traffic to my web site. During the next few weeks, I will share these with you and provide some detailed explanations why these 7 steps will gain you additional traffic and more importantly additional business.

Believing in proper planning promotes positive performance (the 5-Ps), your topic selection should be based upon your “demand statistics” or how many times past articles have been viewed. For example, at http://www.ezinearticles.com, authors have the ability to track the number of times that their articles have been viewed. On April 20, 2005, I began to submit articles and now have over 40 articles in a variety of topics posted at this site. These articles have secured over 7,000 views in approximately 5 months. Most of these articles are receiving one to three views per day; however when I recently jumped topics to Internet SEO and web traffic, several articles began receiving 10 to 15 views per day.

Also, your article should look to the demand within the marketplace through the use of key words such as http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion, through Google and Yahoo searches and by reading posts in the various Groups and Blogs. Remember, potential clients or customers use the Internet to meet their current or future needs.

WRITING HINT: The article is not about how much you know, but rather how much your prospective client wants to know.

Many writers write not only for business purposes, but because they have a passion to share their knowledge with others. Occasionally, I write an article that is reactionary to something I have just read or to some thought that just popped into my brain. Yet, I still do the research to ensure that my writing efforts will be beneficial to potential readers and myself. What I have learned as an Internet writer and marketer is that there exists a continual challenge to connect our passion to our purpose to improve our performance.

Planning a Wedding, Renewal of Vows, or Baby Naming Ceremony at Home? What to Look Out For

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

There are many benefits to having your wedding, renewal of vows, baby naming or other ceremony at home. The obvious ones are that there is no venue hire, you don’t have to work around other bookings, you are not restricted as far as access for setting up, nor hurried to finish up and get out at a set time. In addition, you are on familiar territory, and all your normal domestic facilities are conveniently to hand.

But a ceremony at home can also turn into a chaotic mess, and there can be health and safety issues if you don’t follow a few simple guidelines which will ensure you avoid the pitfalls:

Right Sizing

Before you make a single other decision, you need to work out what the maximum number of people (not just guests) your home can accommodate. And this all comes down to one simple thing – people divided by toilets. The average person goes to the toilet once every three hours. The average toilet to guests ratio that venues work on is that you need one toilet for every 70 people. But that is presuming that toilets visits are spread evenly, which is never the case. Particularly if people have traveled some distance, you could get a queue before the ceremony starts, and then another peak some 2-3 hours later. If there will be children, senior citizens, or pregnant women on your guest list you can expect more frequent comfort stops will be required. In my experience, for a home ceremony, no more than 35 people per toilet is workable.

Regardless of the number of toilets available, however, the maximum number of guests that can be accommodated to ensure a successful ceremony is dictated by the maximum number of people that can be accommodated by the inside room or covered space that you would use in case of bad weather.

Arrival and introduction of guests

If you are planning on making an entrance, delegate someone to meet and greet guests as they arrive. If there are to be a large number of guests, it may be appropriate to delegate this task to several people.

Ensure that someone is delegated to meet and greet your celebrant and that there is a quiet space available so the celebrant can brief participants if there hasn’t been a rehearsal or participants haven’t been able to make the rehearsal.

The Ceremony Space

There are three things to consider when deciding where in your home or garden to hold the ceremony

  • The Space

Layout is important – your guests should be close enough to where you and the celebrant will be standing to form an intimate grouping and ensure that everyone hears and sees the ceremony. There needs to be an attractive backdrop, and guests should not be squinting into the sun. Backlit photographs will mean that most of them will show the ceremony participants in silhouette, and the full detail of the ceremony won’t be captured. The layout needs to be in place before the guests arrive.

  • Noise

Houses and gardens can be quite noisy places. Outside ceremonies are subject to all manner of external noise disturbances such as aircraft, animals, lawnmowers etc. If holding your ceremony during the day time, you might consider asking your neighbors to not use their lawnmowers or power tools for the period of the ceremony (allow a little leeway either side). If noise is likely to disturb the ceremony, it may be more appropriate to hold the ceremony indoors, but noise can also be a problem indoors. While you might have become so accustomed to your noisy air conditioner or fridge the video camera is going to pick it all up if the ceremony space is too close to the noise source.

  • Weather

Consider both hot and inclement weather. There should be a suitable space either inside or under cover in case bad weather prevents holding the ceremony outside. Severe sunburn can occur in a very short time, and heat and sun can cause dehydration in children and older guests, particularly at the hottest time of the day so it is best to position everyone in the shade for a daytime ceremony. To guard against dehydration think about making sure everyone has water or other non-alcoholic liquid as they arrive.

Animals and Children

Any domestic animals that could interfere with the ceremony, or become unsettled by the guests, should be shut away or put in the kennels for the day.

Small children can find it difficult to be quiet and listen to the ceremony. If there are to be large numbers of small children attending you may find it useful to delegate someone to take care of them away from the ceremony space. Provision of play leaders or even a jumping castle has been very successful in my experience, but something as simple as a child-friendly video and a ’sitter’ works well too.

Health and Safety

There are some basic safety rules that should be followed:

  • Entrances and exits to the property and to the ceremony space should be clear and safe to use.

  • Garden ponds and pools are a potential hazard for young children and thus access to them should be made safe.

  • Any sort of construction in your garden, whether temporary, such as a hired marquee, or permanent, such as a deck or gazebo, should be well erected, properly secured and safe.

  • Outside electrical equipment, for example sound equipment, must be safe. There should be no trailing leads, wires or cables. Leads and cables should be kept well away from walkway areas, and firmly taped down.

Insurance

For your own piece of mind make sure that your domestic insurance policy covers third party liability for visitors.
